At times, it may take over a month for a letter to reach a prisoner. Some prisoners receive a number of letters each day, and between the work they are forced to do in prison and taking care of their health and sanity it may take a while to respond. Bottom line: remain patient and if you do not hear from them in a few months or so, drop another line.

I write to a prisoner in federal prison and she has a list of 100 people she can write BACK to (although she can receive letters from anyone) – so maybe the situation is that Mumia and Leonard are unable to write back. Maybe someone at ABCF knows specifically what their situation is.

My understanding is that this only happens for prisoners in CMUs (communications management units)

      • brooklynabcf says:

Ditto re: CMUs. Mumia and Leonard’s correspondence should not be limited in that way. However, with many political prisoners their mail goes through an additional step of scrutiny before it reaches them, and they are often busy with legal initiatives, projects, organizing and mentoring other prisoners, keeping up with the news, etc. Additionally, Mumia and Leonard are two of the more well-known political prisoners in the U.S. With Mumia’s 60th birthday approaching and Leonard’s clemency campaign underway, both of them may be receiving significant amounts of mail these days (which of course would be great and folks should continue to write to them). The best bet is to be patient and persistent.
